Special Education Department
Special education is specially designed instruction that meets the unique educational and developmental needs of children with disabilities.
Services include early intervention for preschool-aged children beginning at age three, as well as support for school-aged students in grades TK–8.
For students with an Individualized Education Program (IEP), instruction is aligned with the core curriculum. The IEP team outlines any necessary modifications, accommodations, teaching strategies, and additional support services to help the student succeed.
Parents of children with disabilities, from ages three to twenty-one, have specific educational rights under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). These rights, known as procedural safeguards, also apply to surrogate parents and to students aged eighteen and older who are receiving special education services.
Luther Burbank School District is a member of the NW SELPA Community Advisory Committee (CAC). The CAC collaborates with local school districts and the County Office of Education to offer a continuum of programs and services for individuals with disabilities, from birth through age 22.
