Dear Luther Burbank School Families, 

With tremendous joy and immense gratitude, I’m writing to introduce myself as the newest member  of the Luther Burbank Elementary School District Governing team in my role of Superintendent Principal effective July 1, 2024. My name is Ladislao (Lalo) Lopez, and I’m honored and privileged  to serve the Luther Burbank community in its efforts to engage, educate, and empower staff and  students to grow their mind, body, and spirit in a safe and nurturing environment. 

In my most recent role as Area Assistant Superintendent for a school district serving over 20,000  students, I have been fortunate to learn from the most caring and effective leaders at the state and  international level. I’m intimately aware of the power of an asset-based approach to educate students  that are growing in challenging environments. Based on this approach, my current team has been able  to reduce student absenteeism and suspensions while increasing academic achievement. I’m  confident that by engaging and hearing the community’s voices we can grow Luther Burbank students to unparalleled levels of success.  

Based on my personal and professional journey from homelessness to the Superintendency, I know  that all students will rise to our expectations if we believe in them and provide them with the tools to  relentlessly go after their goals. It is our responsibility as adults at home and at school to develop the  habits of mind for students to develop the discipline to do what is right even when it is  uncomfortable. My experience in multiple roles in education at the site and district level have  prepared me to grow leaders and empower staff to provide a comprehensive and engaging  educational experience for all students. 

I’m grateful to retiring Superintendent Edith Mourtos for her years of service leading Luther Burbank  Elementary and for involving me in the decision-making process for the upcoming school year. In  the coming weeks and months, I eagerly anticipate the opportunity to personally connect with you. I  am genuinely excited to hear your stories, aspirations, and concerns. Your insights are invaluable,  and I encourage you to share your thoughts as we embark on this journey together to build upon  Luther Burbank Elementary’s tradition of academic and athletic excellence. Hola Familia y Comunidad, 

Con gran alegría y gratitud, escribo para presentarme como el nuevo miembro del equipo de la Mesa  Directiva de Luther Burbank Elementary School District en mi función de Superintendente-Director  empezando el primer día de Julio del presente año. Mi nombre es Ladislao “Lalo” López y es un  honor y un privilegio para mí servir a la comunidad en sus esfuerzos por hacer crecer la mente, el  cuerpo y el espíritu de los estudiantes en un ambiente seguro y enriquecedor. 

En mi más reciente trabajo como Superintendente de Área para un distrito escolar que atiende a más  de 20,000 estudiantes, he tenido la suerte de aprender de los líderes más atentos y eficaces a nivel  estatal e internacional. Soy íntimamente consciente del poder de un enfoque basado en una  mentalidad positiva para educar a los estudiantes que están creciendo en un entorno desafiante. Con  base en este enfoque, mi equipo actual ha podido reducir los índices de ausentismo y suspensión y al  mismo tiempo aumentar el rendimiento académico de los estudiantes. Estoy seguro de que al  involucrar y escuchar las voces de la comunidad podemos hacer que nuestros alumnos alcancen un  nivel de rendimiento alto. 

Basado en mi trayectoria personal y profesional desde la falta de un lugar estable donde vivir en mi  niñez hasta obtener el puesto de superintendente; sé que todos los estudiantes estarán a la altura de  nuestras expectativas si creemos en ellos y les brindamos las herramientas para perseguir  incansablemente sus objetivos. Es nuestra responsabilidad como adultos en el hogar y en la escuela  desarrollar hábitos mentales para que los estudiantes desarrollen la disciplina para hacer lo correcto  incluso cuando sea incómodo.  

Agradezco a la superintendente saliente Edith Mourtos por sus años de servicio al frente de la escuela  primaria Luther Burbank y por involucrarme en el proceso de toma de decisiones para el próximo  año escolar. En las próximas semanas y meses, anticipo con impaciencia la oportunidad de  conectarme personalmente con cada uno de ustedes. Estoy realmente emocionado de conocerlos,  escuchar sus historias, aspiraciones e inquietudes. Sus ideas de cómo mejorar el distrito son  invaluables para mí y espero su participación activa mientras nos embarcamos juntos en este viaje  para desarrollar nuestra tradición de excelencia académica y atlética. Juntos, crearemos un entorno  atractivo, divertido y afectuoso que inspire a nuestros estudiantes a alcanzar logros incomparables.
